MENTAL HEALTH IS ALSO A FORM OF HEALTH
According to Al Jazeera and BBC News as reported on Yahoo, at least 30 to 43 people havebeen killed in renewed violence in Nigeria's central Plateau State. This intercommunal violence, occurring between Muslim herders and Christian farming communities, has been a persistent issue in the region. Despite a 24-hour curfew imposed in Plateau's Mangu local district, attacks continued, with schools, places of worship, and homes being burned and ransacked. The violence, which is said to have been sparked by a row over cattle, also led to the destruction of about 100 houses in one area of Mangu town, and several mosques and churches were destroyed.
When I saw the above news, what came to my mind was the mental health of the people living in that locality. When we talk about health, we forget about Mental health. Alas, mental health is also a form of health.
Read on to see how the youths can secure the mental health of themselves and those of their aged folks.
I had an experience of war few years ago. We were in church dancing and in high spirits when I heard a sound that was like that of bomb explosion and in no time a part of the building went down. Screams filled the air and pandemonium begun as everyone tried to run to safety. I cannot describe how I escaped death till date. The saddest part of the story is that the people who bombed our church were all youths.
Two years later, at dusk, on a Saturday evening, I was seated under a tree, diving from one ocean of thought into another, and while I was on this, I got an insight from a part of the second stanza of my Country's National Anthem -
" Help our Youths the truth to know
In love and honesty to grow
And living just and true
Great lofty height attain
To build a nation where peace and Justice shall reign."
And it then dawned on me that there is a TRUTH that is or has been hidden, so to say, from the YOUTHS and until this truth is known by majority of the youths of our world, the world - in the entirety of the word, may not know and experience peace in its wholesomeness.
Ever since that Saturday evening, every single day, at my hour of prayer, I always mutter the words " Oh God of creation, help us (the youths) the truth to know". However, I have come to the realization of the fact that this TRUTH, supposedly hidden but which is not, can not be made known to the youths by prayers only, except if powered by ACTIONS.
Come to think of it, have you ever imagined a peaceful world? Well, I have. This is because I know that any one can only bring to manifestation anything he or she can imagine. I will give a short description of the kind of peaceful world I have created in my small head. Now, a peaceful world is one without conflict or war, without poverty and hunger, without discrimination and oppression of human rights, without unemployment, with no environmental and ecological destruction. A peaceful World is one with stabilized political situation, one with protection against infectious diseases and illnesses, and one with no or highly reduced occurrence of natural disasters. A peaceful world is one in which there is neither great not small, neither tall nor short, neither black nor white, neither rich nor poor, one in which the only tribe, race, language is HUMANITY.
The Youths must understand that the only potent weapon in the arsenal of the perpetrators of evil and stimulants of war in every country is that they have been able to sow the seed of disunity among the youths and this has been more than enough to cause catastrophe in every nation of the world. It is then high time the Youths understood that to design a peaceful future and to build a world where justice and peace shall reign, there must be a reconfiguration of their mentality and they must coalesce (irrespective of age, gender, race, colour, language and tribe) to uproot that seed of disunity that has been sown amongst them. To attain any great lofty height, the youths must all live in love and honesty, as this is the only way the youths can be kind to one another, avoid conflicts amongst each other, protect the environment together, start peace projects together and ultimately uproot bad leaders from the helms of Government. The youths have the strength and they have the numbers to build a peaceful future that even generations yet unborn would be eternally grateful for and this is the truth that all youths must know.
The future of our world rests on the shoulders of the younger generation. As youth, it is important to realize that we have the power to create a peaceful future for ourselves and generations to come. Through education, empathy, and action, we can build a better world that values harmony and cooperation over violence and conflict.
One of the most important ways that youth can create a peaceful future is through education. Education is key to understanding other cultures and perspectives, which is essential for peaceful coexistence. By learning about the experiences and beliefs of people from different backgrounds, youth can gain a greater understanding of the world and develop a more nuanced view of the issues that affect it.
Another important aspect of creating a peaceful future is empathy. Empathy involves putting oneself in someone else's shoes and seeing the world from their perspective. This can help us to understand their feelings and experiences, and to develop greater compassion and understanding. Empathy is particularly important in conflict resolution, as it can help to break down barriers and create a more peaceful and inclusive society.
Finally, action is key to creating a peaceful future. Youth must be willing to take action to promote peace and understanding in their communities and beyond.
In conclusion, I believe if all youths are exposed to this truth, most of them would become instruments and agents of peace and this is the building block and the catalyst to building a peaceful future and a world full of tranquillity that we all yearn for.
Till we get to the promised land, I shall be waiting for when you'll pass me a glass of water and thank God for the gift of grace for this race.
