MOSQUITOES; ECOLOGY, DISTRIBUTION AND SEASONAL PREVALENCE.
Hey Guys..
I informed you that we would be discussing extensively on Mosquitoes in my last post and I did a very short introduction on Mosquitoes.
Today, we will be looking at their distribution, their ecology and their seasonal prevalence. This is because the knowledge of these four parameters will help us so well in the control of mosquitoes. I feel it's nice to talk about them before we look into ways they can be controlled.
Mosquitoes definitely have a worldwide distribution. However, they are more abundant in areas with high temperature and humidity.
The first of the factors that influence their distribution is climatic factors and these include;
Humidity
Rains
Global warming
Also, Human factors contribute a lot to the distribution of Mosquitoes and some of these factors include;
Human Behaviors such as discarding solid wastes that accumulate water.
Urbanization, as it offers mosquitoes new habitats to proliferate.
Deforestation.
The Breeding habitats of Mosquitoes also include the following;
Overflow Puddles.
Rainfall accumulations.
Streams of soft current.
Springs.
Stagnant water.
Decaying Fruit husks.
Fresh fruit husks.
Tree holes.
Tyres.
Storage containers.
Rubber.
Cement.
Bamboo Holes.
Ceramic.
Metal.
Plastic.
It is worthy for you to note that, population numbers of mosquitoes is directly proportional to the amount of rainfall and then begins to decline at the peak of rainfall where they experience the flushing effect, whereby too much rainfall causes aquatic habitat to overflow, destroying any developing larvae.
In the next post, we'll be exposed to how mosquitoes can be controlled.
Cheers to a Healthier World!
